Grant for activities for PhD’s and postdocs in 2024

In het kader van het OJO-Besluit (Omkadering Jonge Onderzoekers) stelt de Vlaamse regering financiering ter beschikking van de Vlaamse universiteiten voor het organiseren van activiteiten m.b.t. de training en loopbaanontwikkeling van jonge onderzoekers, met name doctorandi en postdocs. Daarbij zijn zowel wetenschappelijke vorming als een bredere professionele ontwikkeling belangrijk.

Deze activiteiten worden georganiseerd door de Doctoral Schools aan iedere universiteit, die hiervoor ook samenwerken met externe organisaties.

Vele wetenschappelijke vakverenigingen organiseren reeds vormingsactiviteiten die interessant kunnen zijn voor doctorandi en postdocs. Om dit soort activiteiten verder aan te moedigen en te ondersteunen, hebben de Doctoral Schools besloten om hiervoor beurzen ter beschikking te stellen van maximum 5.000€ per activiteit van 1 dag en maximum 8.000€ voor een activiteit van meerdere dagen (het precieze toegekende bedrag zal afhankelijk zijn van de ingediende begroting). Voorbeelden van initiatieven zijn workshops, summer schools, conferenties, ….

De ontvankelijkheidscriteria zijn:

• Actieve deelname van jonge onderzoekers (bv. via hands-on activiteiten, poster- of mondelinge presentatie)
• Participatie van jonge onderzoekers van minimaal drie Vlaamse universiteiten (bij voorkeur van alle vijf)
• De activiteit moet passen in één of meerdere categorieën vermeld in de bijlage.
• Jonge Vlaamse onderzoekers (PhD/postdocs) kunnen gratis of tegen een beperkte deelnamekost deelnemen.
• Het initiatief moet plaatsvinden tussen 01/01/2024 en 31/12/2024.

De financiering is in hoofdzaak bedoeld voor het vergoeden van het transport (economy class vluchten) en verblijf (max 250 €/dag) van gerenommeerde buitenlandse sprekers/wetenschappers. Daarnaast mag een honorarium van maximaal 250 € voorzien worden voor deze wetenschappers. De subsidie mag niet gecombineerd worden met andere financiering toegekend door lokale Doctoral Schools. Opgelet, enkel (Vlaamse/Belgische) wetenschappelijke vakverenigingen komen in aanmerking voor deze oproep. Andere soorten organisaties (bvb. expertisecentra, lokale onderzoeksgroepen die interuniversitair willen samenwerken, (internationale) congresorganisatoren, …) dienen andere financieringskanalen aan te spreken, zoals de oproepen van lokale Doctoral Schools.

The Flemish government allocates a grant to the Flemish universities (the so called ‘OJO’ grant) to develop training and career development initiatives for young researchers (PhD’s and postdocs). The goal of these activities are both scientific development as well as a more broader, professional development.

These activities are organized by the Doctoral Schools at each university, sometimes in collaboration with external organizations.

A lot of scientific associations/societies already organize activities that could be interesting for doctoral students and postdocs. To encourage and support such activities, the Doctoral Schools have decided to provide grants of maximum 5.000€ for one-day activities and maximum 8.000€ for activities of two or more days (the exact amount that will be allocated will depend on the submitted budget overview). Examples of initiatives are workshops, summer schools, conferences, …

The criteria for eligibility are:

Active participation of young researchers (for example via hands-on activities, poster or oral presentations)
Participation of young researchers of minimum three Flemish universities (preferably all five)
The activity must fit into one or more of the categories listed in the attached document
Young researchers can participate free of charge or at a limited cost.
The initiative has to take place between 01/01/2024 and 31/12/2024.
The allocated budget is primarily intended for covering the transport costs (economy class for flights), hotel/sustenance costs (max. 250€ per day) and the honorarium (max. 250€) of renowned international guest speakers/scientists. The grant can’t be combined with other funding awarded by local Doctoral Schools. (More information about the conditions and eligible costs can be found in the attached application form.)

Please note that only (Flemish/Belgian) scientific societies are eligible for this call. Other types of organizations (e.g. centers of excellence, local research groups wishing to have an interuniversity collaboration, (international) conference organizers, …) should apply to other funding channels, such as calls from local Doctoral Schools.

The anticipated date/period and location of the activity
A description of the activity
The anticipated participant number of young Flemish researchers (PhD/postdoc). If this event has already taken place in previous years, please include the program and mention the number of participants (total and number of Flemish PhD/postdocs).
A detailed budget. Reimbursement of travel expenses and accommodation is based on original invoices.
